Bosch’s With You: Defamiliarisation
RAIG (R018)

Dima T. Pilot, the guitar player of a Moscow-based Pilots Up In Smoke founded Bosch’s With You when he wanted to play a bit more ambient stuff in the post rock/experiemental/psychedelia spirit. He has released a couple of albums before this. Defamiliarisation is a live album recorded in studio, though, and it also includes another guitarist, a drummer and a bass player. There are influences at least from bands like Stars of the Lid, Fly Pan Am, GYBE!, My Bloody Valentine etc. Although the album was recorded live in the studio the production is top-notch and the sound just tickles your ears.

This about one-hour-long album has five lengthy tracks. The album is started in a very ambient and lad-back style with the over 20-minute-long ”#1-As It Is Bird” that after its relaxed, transparent and psychedelic beginning grows little by little and starts to rock towards the end. A totally amazing, atmospheric opener! Also the beautiful ”Penetrating In/Outside of View III” begins peacefully and after seven minutes it’s rather powerful stuff bringing to mind GYBE! and friends. A great number, as well. With its serene and ambient initial stage ”HDTD Do the D.O.W. Another Way” is a really touching, sad and at times slow track. Before the six-minute-marker the track speeds up and an outgoing, rocking section starts, but it cools down again in the end into a soft floating. ”HCTD a Modern Defamiliarisation” begins in a drone way but starts to rock pretty hard but relatively slow already after one minute, and at around the three-minute-marker the comp disappears for a while. The end is rather soft post rock and includes many different parts. The last number ”The Last Image Attenuation” carries on directly where the previous track ends and in a same style. Beautiful, melancholic, slow and soft stuff. At around six and a half minutes the track accelerates a bit but chills out again in the end. At the very end there is short chaos that stops all of a sudden.

In summary, Defamiliarisation is a very enjoyable whole, and I like the album a lot. The guitar players are able to create a really nice world of effects, and the album is a pretty psychedelic experience and includes some noise elements, but the beautiful, bubbling and pulsating delays play the main role. The drummer and bass player also do their job very well. I’m already looking forward to the next album!
